By the year 2030, there will be more people over age 60 in Lex. than under 18! According to AARP, 90% older adults want to age at home…but many face numerous obstacles making it difficult to age SAFELY at home. Over the past 20 months, a team of individuals and organizations collaborated together (see attached flyer) to share a vision and take action to make VILLAGES a reality in ALL Lex. zip codes. Many cities across our nation have successfully implemented this program; it is not a ‘new’ concept.
A Village is not a place; it is a membership organization that supports older adults desiring to remain in their homes. Villages keep elders connected to volunteers who can help with simple home maintenance tasks or technology questions, provide access to vetted service providers (plumbers, electricians), etc. AND connected to each other with volunteering, conversation and activities to overcome isolation. Villages are a grassroots, neighborly way of helping many elders thrive at home.
At Town Hall meetings this summer in each Council district in Lex, What is a Village ? will be shared with plenty of Q&A time, UK researchers will assist with needs assessment surveys, educational ‘health and safety’ stations will be staffed by professionals, keynote speakers will share specific age related concerns., a raffle; food and fellowship too. Your CM Joseph Hale and/or his Leg Aide are expected to attend to share their support in helping shape the next steps.
